Fall Greetings! In the last week Fall has expressed itself. Leaves are floating to the ground, trees are beginning to show their skeleton structure, the sky is clear and blue, and temperatures have dipped. Fall is a colorful transition time that cannot be ignored. A sign that life is pulling back in preparation for a deeper change of dormancy; yet how beautiful the natural world is to view! Nature seems in full acceptance of change and is our teacher of life transitions and being one with the beauty of the inescapable pattern of life; death, change, and rebirth. We hope you will join us for Dia de los Muertos at Spirit Canoe Lodge!

Day of the Dead Costume Fiesta Dance & Potluck October 31 & Nov1 Purification Lodge @ Noon (newcomers arrive 11am)

Our Day of the Dead Ecstatic Dance is a celebration of life and our loved ones who are no longer with us.  This celebration began in the Aztec, Toltec, and Nahua cultures thousands of years ago when mourning was considered disrespectful.  Death can represent freedom from physical suffering and is part of the process of life.  We are birthed from the spirit realm and we return to it when our physical body dies.  In Appalachia we have “Decoration Day” when families come together in cemeteries where their loved ones are buried.  It’s a time of family reunion, decorating the graves with flowers, and often sharing food.  Honoring our ancestors by celebrating them teaches us a more joyful perspective of the human journey that is “life” and prepares us for the day we too become spirits!

• Large Altar set up for you to bring flowers, candles, spirit food offering, and pictures of your loved ones.

Day of the Dead Purification Lodge Sunday, November 1 @noon (newcomers arrive at 11am) Maria Night Eyes will be pouring this lodge that celebrates our ancestors who have passed, as well as phases of life that are dying, and even aspects of our lives that should be put to death so that the new can be born. RSVP to receive the usual protocols and contact Maria.

We welcome back our facilitator, Nam Joti Kaur Khalsa. Brooms are not only a symbol of cleansing but also of protection and power throughout time and place; especially amongst women. Join us for a broom making workshop where we will gather as a Circle of Women to weave both a hand whisk and a full sized handled broom. Our time will be spent in ceremony, ritual and storytelling like so many women who came before. A purification lodge to activate our new brooms and whisks is optional! Dancing Your Dreams Awake!

Dancing has its roots in ritual prayer. Early humans danced for rain, successful hunting, fertility rites, appeasing the gods, and more. When we let our hair down, align with sound music, let our bodies move to their own unique rhythm, we open a channel to a higher energy that lifts our spirit. Dancing is a celebration of life - a sacred technique to brush off stagnant energy and the doldrums of life’s challenges. Like prayer our intent brings focus within our dance. All prayers must then be released to powers greater than our own in order for them to manifest.

It is our conscious release of “how” our desires will manifest that activates “the seed of our prayer”. Our dreams begin growing from that seed because we are in the act of doing; caring for the seeds, nourishing them by doing things that create the space for the dream to be birthed in it’s own perfect timing. Anyone who has worked in the garden can relate to this concept! One of my teacher’s teacher would often say “Get busy and stay busy!” As we stay busy, we must notice the work that contributes toward our priorities versus that which distracts or drains our energy. Do good work, be contentedly tired, and one day we will look around and see that what we so desired has come to be.

August 15-16 Eagle Dance Community Prep Weekend- Saturday we will be hosting a craft day at SCL to guide new participants in the creation of their shield, cutting a forked pole, and putting together their eagle whistle/finger plumes. Sunday we will work in the arbor putting in new plants and mulching the processional pathway. RSVP

Juice cleanses are shown to heal medical conditions and reduce the need for pharmaceuticals to fix our symptoms. A cleanse can bring greater clarity and increase our will to incorporate healthier eating habits. When we make changes with the support of others it is much easier than starting something on our own. QiGong and other simple activities will be offered to connect body, spirit, and nature as we cleanse. Participants will be provided a list of suggested fruits and vegetable to bring. Summer Solstice Purification Lodge, June 20th

Summer Solstice Purification Lodge & Potluck - June 20th @ 6pm.

It’s a rare treat that I’m home for the Solstice. I’m usually in Arizona at our annual SunDance ceremony, but this year I needed to stay home and get the full firefly and summer gardening experience. Many of us are bone tired by the time we hit the bed. It’s hard these days to actually slow down, be with the season, and really enjoy each other’s company. I invite you to celebrate this longest day and go slowly into the night with me where all we have to do is cleanse, release, and be rejuvenated… The best times of our lives are often when we stop ‘doing” and enjoy the sweetness of life!

Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere is the astronomical start of summer, featuring the year's longest day and shortest night. This is a sacred ceremony that is open to all people that desire to connect with the elements, the worlds of Grandmother Earth, to pray (for self, life and others), to purify (emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually), and who choose to grow and evolve as humans.  The alchemy of this ceremony creates a safe space for us to let go of what no longer serves us and connect with Spirit to receive guidance and healing. Join us to align with and welcome the season of Summer! Forest Sanctuary Day June 7th

I’ve recently returned from a 10-day permaculture design immersive at Wild Abundance in Barnardsville, NC, where Erica and I walked a path of deep learning and connection. It was a journey jam-packed with fantastic teachers and new soul-connections with like-minded folks who share a vision for healing humanity’s relationship with the earth and becoming more self reliant. We feel so deeply inspired by the many ways we can steward this land with the wisdom we absorbed, and my heart was glad to realize I have already been practicing this way of being—mimicking the sacred patterns of nature, experimenting, and listening to nature’s constant feedback.

In a nutshell, permaculture is an ancient wisdom that indigenous cultures have carried for thousands of years, living in true harmony with the Great Mystery. It is the good common sense of paying attention to the cues and teachings that the Earth offers us every day. By designing food and medicine gardens around our living spaces, we create a sanctuary where plants that thrive together are woven back into the landscape.

The beauty of a thoughtful design brings out the art and creativity of those who steward the land, providing nourishment for all beings that dwell here. Ultimately, permaculture is a way of life born from quiet observation, feedback from the natural world, and a commitment to ethics and values that ensure every living thing is cared for and receives its fair share.

New Moon & New Directions

On a soul search in the woods to revive my spirit and be loved by triangle faces of trilliums and lacy maidenhair ferns… I saw them in the corner of my eye. Morels! The dry weather had given me little hope of actually finding some this year but once again nature teaches me that surviving the dry spells and hardships of life bring about our greatest harvests.

The April New Moon is full of fiery cataclysmic energy that can lead us into healing or back down the well worn road we know so well. Just when you think the world might take a peaceful moment to exhale and go to the beach, we are asked to stretch even further and lean into the unexpected. What’s that old saying about God and the Universe not giving you more than you can handle? New moons are for fresh perspectives and new beginnings. The Universe is sending us a nudge to heal old wounds and take the higher road. It’s not that easy. It’s not all unicorns and roses out there….but there are magickal Morels if you keep looking!

Eagle Dance Preparation Zoom - Sunday, April 19 @ 5:00 PM 6:30 PM Preparations can often feel mysterious and overwhelming, so Kelly will be answering questions to help you along in your process. It is recommended that one start preparations 2-4 weeks in advance of the ceremony.We are gathering on zoom to support first time Eagle Dancers in making or crafting their ceremonial items. We also pray to bring our beauty and purpose into the world around us. The people of Grandmother Earth need our prayers.  We have chosen to be alive in this special time and humanity is calling us to participate as we bridge the old world into the new one currently emerging.

Springtime & Star Maiden's Circle Class

Trout Lilies are currently in full bloom across the Appalachian Mountains. These beloved spring ephemerals symbolize fertility and renewal, with leaves that resemble brook trout—a sign the Cherokee recognized as the time to begin fishing.

The woods here at Spirit Canoe Lodge are home to many large communities of these flowers. Ants spread their seeds, and it can take five to six years before they finally flower. Each year, the root bulb digs deeper into the ground, protecting the plant from surface hazards. We once had a spring dug out and I feared the tractor work would eradicate them; however, they returned a few years later in even larger numbers.

Trout lilies are much like human communities. We dig in, hold on, and continue to grow together.

SCL Community Service Day & Equinox Lodge

March 21 Community Service Day @ SCL: When we give our time and energy to the people, places, and causes that matter to us, we spark the "gift economy"—the new world we are imagining together. In her book The Serviceberry, Robin Wall Kimmerer speaks to the ethic of reciprocity at the heart of this economy. The serviceberry tree symbolizes a system where wealth is defined by having enough to share, and where giving creates community rather than debt. In a world often defined by scarcity, we can each take small actions within our own spheres to steward the Earth and birth a new way forward.

In the spirit of gifting one another and Spirit Canoe Lodge, please join us for a day of community service. It is spring and time to sow new seeds! We will be planting food and medicine, as well as native rootlets and ramp bulbs in the forest. Tasks include prepping soil, planting seed starts, burning brush, adding soil to greenhouse beds, collecting stones for purification lodges, organizing mushroom logs, moving firewood, and general maintenance.

All volunteers will be provided with lunch and dinner. If you are joining us for the Spring Equinox Purification Lodge on Sunday, you are also welcome to stay overnight.

The Lodge has been a sanctuary for many travelers and seekers over the years and needs your support to help us grow. Our land and gardens have the potential to provide food and medicine to many people.  All who support our work here shall share in our abundance.  We look forward to spending this time together in service.

March 22 Spring Equinox Purification Lodge @ 1pm After a long cold winter…a spring day like the last few is a welcome friend for all! Join us as we celebrate spring with a community ceremony.

During an equinox the sun is directly above the equator and appears directly overhead at Noon. It is a time when the night and day are of equal length and the sun rises due East and sets due West. A moment of balance, stillness, the anticipation of Resurrection, and dominance of light. Spring Rites are all about celebrating fertility becoming receptive to the seeding of life and light as our days become longer....life is about the journey of what we plant through our experiences and harvest as wisdom. All that said, Spring is my favorite season! It is always a hopeful and exciting season when the external world reflects the internal awakening.

Newcomers must arrive by Noon for orientation. There is no charge for ceremony however cash donations and medicine gifts for Kelly and the fire crew are requested to cover the costs and create balance for what you receive.

What an amazing Winter Women’s Gathering! Women of all ages came together to listen, support, mentor, and challenge one another. April 19th Eagle Dance Zoom Attention first time dancers! We know preparations can often feel mysterious and overwhelming, so Kelly will be answering questions to help you along in your process. It is recommended that one start preparations 2-4 weeks in advance of the ceremony. We are gathering on zoom to support Eagle Dancers in making or crafting their ceremonial items for Eagle Dance. May 15-17 We are thrilled to offer our 5th Annual Eagle Dance!  Our personal and collective prayers are danced to the center tree.  The “tree of life” acts as an antenna to spirit as we pray for guidance from the Universe in the coming year.  Drummer singers maintain the heartbeat on a pow-wow drum during the entire dance and maintain the energy for us as we dance back and forth to the center tree.  The drum does not stop until we are complete! We will be fasting, and drinking water is optional and recommended.  The dance is a meditative/trance experience.  Dancing keeps us in our bodies and out of our head so we can receive “with care and with clarity” messages from spirit. The Dance allows prayers for manifesting a specific intent for self, the Collective, and others. We also pray to bring our beauty and purpose into the world around us. The people of Grandmother Earth need our prayers.  We have chosen to be alive in this special time and humanity is calling us to participate as we bridge the old world into the new one currently emerging.

Winter Solstice

The healing gift of snow brings a purifying crystalline energy that nourishes the land, and feeds our soul… As a different form of water, snow is deeply connected to our emotions. In my tradition, snow sits in the North on the water wheel, which is also the location associated with the air and the mind. Snow quiets our mind and settles our emotions. This cleansing energy also brings nutrients from the clouds down to the earth. The crystal structure of a snowflake is unique. Each one is different yet made of the same stuff. Each human is a unique individual yet made of the same stuff. As single crystals fall amidst millions and billions of others we are reminded that we are part of the greater grandeur of mother nature and the universe. May we remember this Winter Solstice to focus on our common threads of humanity and suspend our thoughts of separation, and may those seeking shelter this season find comfort and warmth. Life and death are the ultimate in paradoxical situations. To live means that something must die. No being or life form escapes this fact. I realize some of you are thinking about what you might be killing in every step you take…so take heart…the experience of death is likely more neutral and beautiful than we imagine. Acceptance of this can bring greater peace. As we live our life there are many death/changes that continually occur, and as we survive the small death changes we learn how to live more courageously. Awareness of how death operates in our life increases our ability to value the richness of life. This is called making death an ally. Join us as we have a discussion about how death operates in each of our lives. Harvest Moon Purification Lodge, Sunday, October 5th @ Noon. First time participants please arrive by 11am. I was excited to find out we are in the Harvest Full Moon energy (October 6th) for our Lodge! Also, a super moon (perigree) which means the moon is closer to the earth and appears very large on the horizon! It's an auspicious time to have a closer look at what’s on your horizon. Perhaps you have prayers that need amplification, old stories that no longer define you, and burdens ready to be released. The Lodge is also an integration for the folks doing their Night on the Mountain of Fear ceremony, and we honor their courage. Let’s celebrate Harvest Time and share the gratitude for summer's bounty. When we come together we realize how much it feeds our spirit that we are not alone and we grow together faster than we grow alone.We could use a few folks on the fire crew if you are inclined to be of service or plan to attend this lodge let me know! SCL Vision Quest Weekend October 3-5

When we touch nature with tenderness and awe…..we become part of everything. Mother Nature envelopes us with her nurturing and healing arms and while fully in her presence, all else disappears. We are part of her and a mirror of her beauty. The more we observe the details, the more beauty we can see….here see the different types of lichen and moss, tiny ferns, and succulents flowering, all on the surface and cracks of an ancient amphibolite monolith in our local mountains. Remember that the unbelievable beauty we see in nature is also a reflection of the amazing scenery that resides in each one of us. Spirit Dance & Full Moon Purification Lodge, August 9-10

Summer is flying by! Our ecstatic dance will be under a full moon of August @ 7pm. Dancing begins @ 8-11pm.  Together we honor Sister Moon, the Elements, and Worlds of Grandmother Earth, and how we as humans must come into greater alignment with them .  The dance is meant to be a prayerful, internal connection with ourselves and nature to gain greater insight and harmony.  As we develop a closer and caring relationship with nature, we find the solutions we seek are all around us in support!  In a world seemingly gone mad there is one thing we can do that will make a difference now….DANCE!  Camp or stay over for our Lodge on Sunday.

Matt Wasson will be our DJ for the dance.  He brings his AZUL musical expertise and creativity with a soulful beat to connect our spirits, make our feet move, and seduce our body to move without thinking.  Matt is tailoring a dance set to connect us with nature and the energies of the Full Moon.

Costumes Encouraged:  Please wear regalia with a nature theme!  We are mending our communication lines with the nature and Grandmother Earth by honoring the plant, animal, mineral, and spirit world (ancestors).  Ideas include…weather & elemental spirits, animal totems, fairy and gnome realm, mythological creatures (dragon, mermaid, etc…)

Sister Moon is an integral part of our life on Grandmother Earth.  The moon rotates around the earth.  Her face is lit by Grandfather Sun.  The earth’s shadow creates the moon phases in this magical rotation.  You could say she sees everything and knows everything as she witnesses our daily rotation.  Humanity is deeply impacted from this relationship. The full moon is the peak energy of the last 28/29 days of our life.  A lot has happened, a lot has been exposed, and as we look ahead…there is much to plan for.  Bring to our gathering what has been exposed within you this past month, this past season, and the willingness to continue on into the unknown with hope, faith, and trust. There will be a potluck after the ceremony.

After a soaking rain, a July walk in the forest brings the occasional sighting of a red eft. Literally, I screech with pleasure when I see one. The eastern newt is a most unusual member of the salamander family. Salamanders are a sign of ecological balance. They absorb water directly through their skin and cannot survive in contaminated waters. Newts are born aquatic, they go terrestrial in the eft phase for one to several years in a day glow orange suit, and then return to water as an adult exchanging feet for fins and turning olive brown. Amphibians have a “double life”. They bridge water and earth. Masters of metamorphosis they teach us how to be more adaptable in our own lives. Their slow and measured walk connects them deeply with the earth’s energy and prepares them for the next physical transition. As much as we’d like for things to happen quickly in our lives, change has it’s own timing, and if we find the right pace it can happen without the struggle. Slowing down increases our presence, connection to everything around us, and we have a clearer picture of reality. Moving too fast, we miss things that could be helpful. A wise person once said “slow and steady wins the race”…or was that Master Turtle?

We are excited to welcome Nam Joti Kaur Khalsa to SCL for this special broom making retreat. She specializes in both functional sweepers as well as symbolic and ceremonial pieces. Gather 'round for a charming and hands-on journey into the world of broom craft. In this magical workshop, you'll learn to weave your very own whisk or full broom by hand, using natural broom corn, twine, and traditional techniques passed down through generations. Perfect for beginners, dabblers, and curious makers alike, this workshop invites you to slow down, weave with intention, and leave with a completed whisk broom (or two) and the skills to make more. Their slow and measured walk connects them deeply with the earth’s energy and prepares them for the next physical transition. As much as we’d like for things to happen quickly in our lives, change has it’s own timing, and if we find the right pace it can happen without the struggle. Slowing down increases our presence, connection to everything around us, and we have a clearer picture of reality. Moving too fast, we miss things that could be helpful. A wise person once said “slow and steady wins the race”…or was that Master Turtle?

New comers arrive at Noon for an orientation. This sacred ceremony is open to all men and women that desire to connect with the elements, the worlds of Grandmother Earth, to pray (for self, life and others), to purify (emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually), and who choose to grow and evolve as humans.  The alchemy of this ceremony creates a safe space for us to let go of what no longer serves us and connect with Spirit to receive guidance and healing.  Come join us in a circle of reflections that we can make a jump in our evolution on a personal and collective level.  There will be a potluck after the ceremony.  There is no charge for the ceremony. Donations or an energy exchange for lodge maintenance are appreciated. RSVP

July 26 & 27 Enchanted Handmade Brooms and Whisk Workshop

We are excited to welcome Nam Joti Kaur Khalsa to SCL for this special broom making retreat. She specializes in both functional sweepers as well as symbolic and ceremonial pieces. Gather 'round for a charming and hands-on journey into the world of broom craft. In this magical workshop, you'll learn to weave your very own whisk or full broom by hand, using natural broom corn, twine, and traditional techniques passed down through generations. Perfect for beginners, dabblers, and curious makers alike, this workshop invites you to slow down, weave with intention, and leave with a completed whisk broom (or two) and the skills to make more. All materials are included. Come as you are! Bring your own lunch or a dish to pass for potluck. Choose a one or two day class. REGISTER

August 9 Full Moon Spirit Dance

Our ecstatic dance will be under a full moon of August.  The dance is meant to be a prayerful, internal connection with ourselves and nature to gain greater insight and harmony.  As we develop a closer and caring relationship with nature, we find the solutions we seek are all around us in support!  In a world seemingly gone mad there is one thing we can do that will make a difference now….DANCE!  Matt Wasson will be our DJ for the dance.  Costumes Encouraged:  Please wear regalia with a nature theme! Donate what you can. August 10 Full Moon Purification Lodge

This event follows the Full Moon Spirit Dance event. RSVP for on or both. Sister Moon is an integral part of our life on Grandmother Earth.  The moon rotates around the earth.  Her face is lit by Grandfather Sun.  The earth’s shadow creates the moon phases in this magical rotation.  You could say she sees everything and knows everything as she witnesses our daily rotation.  Humanity is deeply impacted from this relationship.  Women’s fertility cycles align with her, optimal planting times have historically been practiced, and our planet’s water masses ebb and recede with her gravitational pull.  The full moon is the peak energy of the last 28/29 days of our life.  A lot has happened, a lot has been exposed, and as we look ahead…there is much to plan for.  Bring to our gathering what has been exposed within you this past month, this past season, and the willingness to continue on into the unknown with hope, faith, and trust. There will be a potluck after the ceremony.
