Day of the Dead Costume Fiesta Dance & Potluck October 31
Our Day of the Dead Event is a celebration of life and our loved ones who are no longer with us. This celebration began in the Aztec, Toltec, and Nahua cultures thousands of years ago when mourning was considered disrespectful. Death can represent freedom from physical suffering and is part of the process of life. We are birthed from the spirit realm and we return to it when our physical body dies. In Appalachia we have “Decoration Day” when families come together in cemeteries where their loved ones are buried. It’s a time of family reunion, decorating the graves with flowers, and often sharing food. Honoring our ancestors by celebrating them teaches us a more joyful perspective of the human journey that is “life” and prepares us for the day we too become spirits!
Costumes encouraged! Children’s activities 11-3pm, followed by music, dancing, costume parade and more. Come for the day and/or stay and celebrate into the evening!
